Cuisine in the Bay
Dining in Tauranga has never been better!
New Zealand’s culinary presentations are regarded as among some of the best in the world. With such a diverse range of cultures and nationalities represented within New Zealand’s shores there is no wonder that restaurants and cafes boast such a taste indulging experience. New Zealand has long been regarded as a ‘clean and green’ nation and this extends to our food which is fresh and tasty and healthy. From sumptuous seafood caught fresh to our delectable prime beef and lamb to the wonderful and nutritious fresh fruit and vegetables. It can all be found in New Zealand.
Here in the Bay of Plenty some of the country’s most inspired culinary presentations using only the freshest ingredients sourced daily, are available for the discerning diner. With imagination, flair and creativity evident in the diverse restaurants and menus on offer there certainly is something that will appeal to everyone!
The Pacific Rim influence that is peculiar to New Zealand has certainly helped shape the culture and cuisine styles that are now commonplace all over the country. Whereas a few years ago, the tastes of New Zealander’s were quite one dimensional, these have certainly undertaken a major change. Now Asian influences from Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Polynesia can be seen by the vast number of ethnic restaurants and cafes operating that offer mouth watering food and flavours.
In saying that the strong and distinct New Zealand style cuisine is still prominent. Lamb, beef, pork, chicken and venison meats are the centerpiece of many dishes. Softer flavoured seafood like crayfish, salmon, and numerous fish dishes, Bluff oysters, paua (abalone), mussels and scallops are exciting to eat. Kumara (sweet potato), kiwifruit and tamarillo and for those with a sweet tooth, delicacies such as pavlova, our national dessert, made from meringue and lashings of whipped cream topped with fresh fruit or berries is also something that visitors to New Zealand MUST try.
