Matamata is only 40 mins from Tauranga and this is where parts of the Lord of the Rings movie was filmed. Hobbiton is the name of the village that the hobbits lived in and their tiny little homes are fascinating and interesting.
The tour begins with a picturesque drive through a Waikato sheep farm that has a spectacular view across to the Kaimai ranges. It involves being guided through the 10 acre site and being given insight on how the Hobbiton set was created. Tours operate daily.
